Tags, Bags, Boxes and More

The first cart I am going to highlight is one of my favorites, although it is discontinued I think it is by far the most popular and versatile. Kim who I bought my original Cricut from told me if I don't get any other carts that this is one I have to have!! So here it is Tags, Bags, Boxes and More!!

http://cheapcartridges.alisonsscrapbooksite.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/-21351504921190870.jpg

Here are images of the main chart

As you can tell there is a large variety in it - something for every occasion!! This is a full cart.
SKU# 29-0022

Here are a few links for cart itself from Cricut

And now for the goodies, what can you do with this cart!!! Since this cart is retired I thought I would add video tutorials instead of just completed projects. You can go to You Tube and search the cart name and you can find anything you ever wanted to make in there I think - but here are a few....but first look at this adorable box..

This box with the flower on the top was made by Jenna at My Favorite Things  - head on over there to see how she made this box.

And the next one is from Creations with Christina she did an entire series and it is amazing!!! I am only having her first one here with links to the rest of them. If you have never visited her site it is well worth it!! As always here is link to her site to find the orginal tutorial http://www.creationswithchristina.com/search/label/Tags%20bags%20boxes%20and%20more%20video%20series.
Her series videos are jammed packed with everything you wanted to know about the topic. Do yourself a favor and watch them all, and while you are visiting her place look around - but let me warn you it is easy to loose track of time over there but well worth it!! Enjoy.

Here are links to the rest of them!

Cricut Cartridges info with samples

I have been pondering over what to do about Cricut cartridges. When deciding which ones I want like everyone I look at what is on it, then I try to find examples of what others have made with it (hehe I also always want to know how many points I can get), also any unique things such as limited, full cart, seasonal etc... So I decided to do a post for every cart and include all of these little tid bits. I will also include any videos that I run across - I know Christina makes some excellent ones which really help you decide if you really want it, and if you do they are great for ideas! The labels will obviously be name of cart along with Cricut and cartridges and whatever else it may fall under such as Christmas or flowers etc and I since this is to help me keep organized I decided to label ones I have or my forever long wish list LOL... So I hope someone finds this helpful in some way, if so please let me know....if there is something that you look for let me know I am always looking for ways to make this place more end info!!! Be sure to check back occasionally as I will be adding to the original posting new ideas I find - I opted to do this so that all of the info and ideas are all in one posting to help make it all easier to find. Any images will be linkable to original site with credit underneath.

Have a GREAT day everyone!!!

Penny Duncan

I am sure most of you know how Penny Duncan is and that her work is amazing! For those of you who don't know who she is, trust me her site is one that should be saved in your favorites!  She designs amazing files that you can use with your Cricut - but she also sells a CD packed full of all of her free designs. I plan on getting a copy just for the ease of having it all in one location..it's only $15.
Her blog is loaded, and I mean loaded with tutorials on everything you can imagine with her own unique and very elegant style! Here is a link to her blog, you might want to grab yourself a cup of coffee and get comfortable before going there....http://pennyduncancreations.blogspot.com/. I haven't asked her for any of her tutorials as the list would be endless! I figured it would be far easier to just have her link here.

Cutting Fabric with Cricut

I am determined to figure out how to use my Cricut to cut fabric - which is part of the reason I bought a Cricut. This post will be whatever I find to get me there....do you have tutorial or hints to share leave me a comment!!

This first one actually taught me an additional lesson. By now you know that I always ask permission...and stress about giving credit...I always encourage everyone that if they find something useful let the original author know. Lesson learned: Never assume something was from company forum! Here is how this first part should of been originally posted.

Sharon at SMCreations has some tutorials when it comes to Cricut and fabric - esp applique!!

Here is a great tip I read about cutting fabric and using SCAL.
You don't have to use inkscape to convert your files any more. I make applique designs all the time from the original scanned image. I use the trace command that is on the file menu in SCAL. When you trace the image click "break apart outlines" button on the trace tool. Once you have traced the image, and it is on a mat in SCAL, add a page tab on the page bar. Select all of the design from page 1 and copy it. Paste it on page two. By doing this, you will then see all of the details separated on the right in folders. You must have advance workspace opened. At this time you can hide or delete the items that you don't want and by using the group/ungroup tool, can take out lettering and marks you don't want. SCAL's path tool allows you to simplify the design and minimize the nodes. You can also edit the design by using the tools on the left. I have just recently found that you can cut fabric without stabilizer if you starch it well. I use best press from Mary Ellen. Batiks work best, but other fabrics will also cut. Find out what stabilizer your mom wants to use if she is machine appliquing. I like Heat and Bond Lite the best, but steam a seam will also work.

You can download the free online version OR buy the app for Iphone for $1.99 (I think) Anyways I think this is really a must have for anyone!! Cutting chipbaord with Cricut

I don't know who Loves2Smock is, but this is a great guide she(he) created. I have seen it a few times on various blogs and since I want to cut my own word books I decided I had better save this. So Loves2Smock Thank you!!! If someone knows this person please have them contact me I would love to add their blog link in here as well.

Here are the details about cutting chipboard with the Cricut:

Finally! A handy dandy chipboard cutting guide! Now YOU don't have to go to the trouble and expense of finding out what will work, and what wont! I went thru and test cut several thicknesses (gauges) with and without the clay coat (white shiny-ish side) and here's the skinny!

*A new blade and mat work best!*

.022- this is like a med-heavy cardstock, blade:5-6, pressure:max,
speed: 4, multi cut:2
.024- think cereal box- same as .022, if clay coated, multi cut:3
.028- IDEAL for cricut usage! blade:6, pressure:max, speed: 4-5
multi cut:4
.032- depending on the way your blade was cut (some are cut with a deeper bevel than others) this will work with the above settings. A long bevel works better, than a shorter one. With a short bevel, the blade on some sections of the cut did not make it all the way thru (like you'd see cutting cartstock with a dull blade) and I needed to go around it lightly with my craft knife. It was just barely attached. I did get a very clean edge running around it with the craft knife though. Compared to the .028 the difference in thickness is nominal.
.040+ is too thick, the blade depth is insufficient to make it through the thickness. It will go thru the machine, but you will have to hand cut it the rest of the way. ANYTHING thicker than .040 is too thick and will damage your machine rollers! I do NOT reccomend anything thicker than .032! It's just not worth damaging your machine and voiding the warranty.

Other info: I prefer the look of plain chipboard, but the clay coating really does make a difference in the stability of the peice. It makes it more rigid, and is ideal for tag books/word books where you want the strength. The grain is finer, and smoother and is also easier to adhere papers to. Stamping/inking and writing on it will vary depending on the specific product.

The good news with the "way too thick chipboard" is it works beautifully with the Bind-it-All machines, and works well for making your own hard-bound book bindings. You can watch a video and download printable instructions on hard binding here:
http://sbl.tvweekly.com/player.php?43030134c9d51a817d55521d538909d5y1268

I hope you all can use this information! Chipboard is really very fun!

*update* The above depth and pressure settings do NOT change because of the new blade housing and blades. You may be able to get away with fewer passes though. You still can not cut anything thicker than a .040! It simply will not feed thru the machine, and you run the risk of breaking it. This has NOTHING to do with the new blade housing's capabilities. This is simply the limit of the machine.

If you are having problems with the edge shredding it can be due to a number of reasons.
-your blade may be dull
-your stock may not be of appropriate quality or density not all chipboard is meant to be cut in this manner
-you may have bits of chipboard debris in the blade housing preventing the blade from swiveling perfectly. How to fix this will come a little later in the post.
-your stock may have shifted slightly
-the mat may be warped or just plain worn out.
-the blade did not line up perfectly on multiple cuts. This can be an intermittant problem, or a flaw in the machine. Try letting the machine rest a while, cut something else, and then changing mats and blades. I find the more times I cut the same thing in the same spot, this is more likely to happen.

I have been using a 60 degree blade (Cricut calls this the deep cut blade) for several months now to cut .028 chipboard. It makes a HUGE difference. They will work in the green blade housing to improve your cuts. They can be purchased from vinyl sign suppliers under the name "roland compatable 60 degree blade". These are not a new item. They have been in use in other plotter machines for many many years.

To remove debris from the blade housing you will need a toothpick, and some tape style adhesive.
-remove your blade and remove any debris you can easliy with your fingers
-add adhesive about 1/4" wide around the tip of the tooth pick and gently poke it into the blade housing. This will stick any paper bits to it. You can pull the bits off and do it agian. Just make sure you aren't ramming anything down into the housing.
-lubricate and reinsert blade into housing

To lubricate the blade and housing you will need a tiny bottle of sewing machine oil.
-remove the blade
-make sure the housing is clean
-add a tiny drop of sewing machine oil to the non sharp end BLADE SHAFT. DO NOT put it into the housing!
-spread it around and wipe any excess off with your FINGERS and wipe your fingers off. You don't want it all drippy, you just want a nice light coating. This will also help keep your blades and housing from rusting if you live in a high humidity climate.
-reinsert blade

All this being said, keep trying. It works. It may take some practice, and some individual adjustments for your own machine...but it does work! Oh, and since I do not work for PC or any other entity, this is all SUGGESTION. I will not be held responsible for anything you choose to try. Every machine is different, as are the users.
